Quick answer

Assurity Life Insurance Company is an A- rated mutual life insurance company founded in 1890 and headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska. Assurity specializes in supplemental and specialty insurance products (return of premium term life, critical illness, accidental death, disability income) rather than mainstream level term. The company is one of the few remaining U.S. carriers offering an ROP rider on no-medical-exam term policies.

Our take

Assurity Life Insurance was born in 2005 as the result of a three-way merger between Woodmen Accident and Life, Security Financial, and Lincoln Direct Life. Despite being relatively new, the company offers a solid array of term, whole, and supplemental life insurance policies, as well as offering policies for the workplace.

Applicants can receive introductory quotes through the company’s website, though bear in mind that these rates are not locked in unless you meet with one of their agents.

Term Life Details
Length of Coverage 10, 15, 20, and 30-year periods
Minimum Coverage: $25,000
Maximum Coverage: $10 million
Estimated Time to Approval: Immediate (with accelerated underwriting)
Product Features:
  • No Medical Exam Option
  • Level Term
  • Conversion Options

Assurity offers level term life insurance policies to applicants between the ages of 18 and 65. Coverage ranges from $25,000 to $10 million and is offered in terms of 10, 20, or 30 years. Coverage is level-term, so customers can expect their death benefit as well as their monthly premium to remain constant throughout their term.

Conversion Options

The policy has a conversion option, so policyholders can convert to a permanent policy at any point during their term.

No Medical Exam Option

Accelerated underwriting is also available, which eliminates the need for a medical exam, but eligibility varies by both age as well as overall health. These no medical exam life policies are also capped at $500,000 for applicants between the ages of 18 and 50, and capped at $350,000 for applicants over 50.

Whole Life Insurance

Whole life insurance offers customers a guaranteed death benefit, as well as a guaranteed rate for cash value accumulation. Policyholders have the option to pay for their policy in a lump-sum payment, over a lifetime, or through a predefined payment plan.

Final Expense Insurance

Assurity doesn’t list a separate category for final expense insurance, but they do offer simplified whole life plans that could be used for final expense insurance for elderly applicants.

Universal Life Insurance

Assurity offers guaranteed universal life policies, which provide flexible premium options and the choice of a level, increasing, or decreasing death benefit. A single-pay option is also available. Policyholders can also borrow from the policy’s cash value and apply this to the premium payments.

Accidental Death Insurance

Assurity offers Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Coverage, which provides a cash benefit if the policyholder loses his or her life in an accident. The specificity of this plan means that policyholders can expect to pay lower monthly premiums and still enjoy a guarantee of benefits. This policy can also be purchased alongside other insurance policies.

Disability Income Insurance

If you are sick or otherwise unable to work, a disability insurance policy ensures that you receive a monthly income.

Critical Illness Insurance

If you are diagnosed with a qualifying illness, you can receive a lump sum payment to cover medical expenses and other financial obligations.

Workplace Benefits

Assurity offers many of these products to businesses and companies who wish to provide their employees life insurance options:

  • Term, whole, or universal life insurance
  • Hospital Indemnity Insurance
  • Disability Income Insurance
  • Critical Illness Insurance
  • Accident Expense Insurance

Typically, group insurance policies purchased through an employer can translate into lower monthly premiums as compared to purchasing a policy from the open market. The details, however, can vary by employer and by state regulation. Ask your employer or human resources department about workplace insurance plans.

Riders

Assurity offers many riders that can be applied to its term and permanent policies. Common riders include:

  • Accelerated Death Benefit - If you are diagnosed with a terminal illness, you may be able to use a portion of your death benefit to pay for medical bills and other end-of-life expenses.
  • Children’s Term - Policyholders have the option of adding children to their policy. This tends to be more affordable than a separate child life insurance plan and provides for a small payout in the event of a child’s untimely death.
  • Waiver of Premium - This rider waives your premiums for a predetermined length of time in the event that you are disabled. This ensures that your policy won’t be cancelled if you are unable to make your monthly payments.

Discounts

In addition to these riders, Assurity also offers discounts to customers who meet the following conditions:

  • Customers who do not use tobacco products
  • Customers who do not practice dangerous hobbies (e.g. skydiving)
  • Discounts are available to younger applicants
  • Customers with healthy blood pressure
  • Customers with a family history of good health

These discounts are applied at the time of issue and may be rescinded if and when the policyholder’s age, health, or lifestyle changes.

Financial ratings

  • A.M. Best: A-
  • BBB: A+

The company also has a reputation for giving back. In addition to assisting with events such as blood drives and local charities, employees may receive time off for participating in community events.

Frequently asked questions

Is Assurity Life Insurance a good company?+

Yes, for its target product categories. Assurity is rated A- (Excellent) by A.M. Best with over 130 years of operating history (founded 1890). The company operates as a mutual life insurance company, owned by policyholders rather than shareholders. Assurity is on the smaller side of major U.S. carriers (about $3 billion in assets) but maintains a specialty focus that allows it to offer products other carriers have discontinued, like return of premium term life and standalone critical illness insurance.

What life insurance products does Assurity offer?+

Assurity offers seven main product types: (1) Term Life - level term in 10/15/20/30-year durations with optional ROP rider, (2) AcciSafe Accidental Death and Dismemberment, (3) Whole Life - simplified-issue whole life for senior final expense, (4) Disability Income Insurance - both short-term and long-term DI, (5) Critical Illness Insurance - standalone product covering 15+ conditions, (6) Income Protection Insurance, (7) Children's Insurance Riders. Assurity's value proposition is breadth across supplemental insurance, not mainstream term.

Does Assurity offer return of premium term life?+

Yes - Assurity is one of the few remaining U.S. carriers offering a return of premium (ROP) rider on level term life policies. ROP refunds 100 percent of premiums paid if you outlive the term. Assurity offers ROP on 20-year and 30-year term policies, with no-exam underwriting available up to age 65. This is one of Assurity's competitive differentiators - many larger carriers (Banner Life, Protective, Symetra) have discontinued ROP riders in recent years.

Does Assurity require a medical exam?+

Most Assurity products offer no-exam underwriting up to age 65 using prescription history, MIB records, and motor vehicle records. This includes Term Life with ROP rider (no-exam up to $300K), AcciSafe AD&D (no-exam), and Critical Illness Insurance (no-exam). For larger face amounts on Term Life or applicants over 65, a paramedical exam may be required. Whole Life products are simplified-issue with no exam.

How much does Assurity insurance cost?+

Sample monthly rates: Healthy 40-year-old female buying $250K Assurity 20-year term with ROP rider, around $32-42/month (versus $18-23 without ROP). Same applicant buying Assurity Critical Illness $50,000 lump-sum, around $28-38/month. 50-year-old buying Assurity AD&D $250,000, around $14-20/month. Assurity's pricing is competitive for specialty products but generally not the lowest for mainstream term; for vanilla term, Banner Life and Protective typically beat them.

What is Assurity Critical Illness Insurance?+

Assurity Critical Illness Insurance is a standalone lump-sum benefit policy that pays a tax-free cash benefit if the insured is diagnosed with one of 15+ covered conditions: heart attack, stroke, cancer, kidney failure, major organ transplant, coronary artery bypass surgery, ALS, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, paralysis, multiple sclerosis, and others. Coverage ranges from $5,000 to $100,000 per occurrence. This is a useful supplement to traditional health insurance, particularly for high-deductible health plans.

How long does Assurity take to approve applications?+

Accelerated-underwriting cases (most no-exam Assurity products) typically return decisions within 1-3 business days. Traditional underwriting with paramedical exam takes 2-6 weeks depending on exam scheduling and lab work. Simplified-issue Whole Life is typically approved within 24-48 hours. Assurity's digital application platform is comparable to peer mid-market carriers for processing speed.

Who should buy life insurance from Assurity?+

Assurity is best for: (1) Buyers wanting return of premium term life - Assurity is one of the few remaining ROP-active carriers, (2) Buyers seeking standalone supplemental products (critical illness, accidental death, disability income) bundled with main term coverage, (3) Applicants ages 30-65 with mild health conditions wanting no-exam underwriting, (4) Buyers who appreciate a mutual carrier focused on supplemental products. NOT the best fit for younger healthy applicants seeking large face amounts of vanilla term life; Banner Life and Protective beat them on price for that.

What is Assurity AcciSafe?+

AcciSafe is Assurity's standalone accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance product. It pays a tax-free lump sum if the insured dies in a covered accident, with specified dismemberment benefits for non-fatal injuries (loss of limb, sight, hearing). Coverage ranges from $50,000 to $500,000 with no medical exam for ages 18-70. AcciSafe includes a 4x common-carrier benefit (quadrupled benefit if death occurs on a commercial plane, train, or bus) which is the strongest in the U.S. AD&D market.

How do I file a claim with Assurity?+

Beneficiaries can file a claim by calling Assurity at 1-800-869-0355 or by visiting Assurity.com/claims. Required documentation includes the certified death certificate, the policy number, and the beneficiary's ID. For critical illness or disability income claims, additional medical documentation may be required. Most death benefit claims are paid within 14-30 days of receiving complete documentation. Critical illness and disability claims may take longer due to medical certification requirements.

Allstate, famous for auto and home coverage, no longer underwrites its own life insurance. It sold Allstate Life Insurance Company and related annuity businesses to Blackstone-managed entities in 2021, and those operations were renamed Everlake Life. Existing Allstate life policies remain in force and are serviced by Everlake, while Allstate agents today refer life shoppers to third-party carriers.
