Common questions

Medicare comparison FAQ

Everything you need to know about Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement (Medigap), Part D, enrollment windows, and how shopping Medicare through an independent broker actually works.

Is Insurancy free to use for Medicare?

Yes. Comparing Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D plans through Insurancy is 100% free to you. Medicare plans are sold at the exact same rates whether you enroll through Medicare directly, a carrier, or through a licensed independent broker like Insurancy. Our compensation comes from the insurance carrier when you enroll, never from you.

When can I enroll in Medicare?

Most people are first eligible during their Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which is the 7-month window beginning 3 months before the month you turn 65, including your birth month, and ending 3 months after. You can also enroll during Medicare Annual Enrollment (October 15 to December 7), Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (January 1 to March 31), or a Special Enrollment Period if you have a qualifying life event such as moving, losing employer coverage, or changes to Medicaid eligibility.

What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement (Medigap)?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare that bundles Parts A, B, and usually D, often with extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing. You use a carrier network. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to fill in cost-sharing gaps like deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. With Medigap, you can see any provider in the U.S. that accepts Medicare and you typically pair it with a standalone Part D plan.

Do I need a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan?

If you take any prescription medications, yes. Original Medicare and most Medicare Supplement plans do not cover outpatient prescriptions, so you would add a standalone Part D plan. Most Medicare Advantage plans already include prescription drug coverage. If you delay enrolling in Part D when you are first eligible and do not have other creditable drug coverage, Medicare assesses a permanent late enrollment penalty on every premium going forward.

Which Medicare carriers do you work with?

Insurancy partners with most major Medicare carriers in the U.S., including Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, Mutual of Omaha, UnitedHealthcare, Wellcare, Devoted Health, Kaiser Permanente, and many regional Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. Plan availability varies by ZIP code, so your licensed agent will show you the options actually available in your area.

Is Medicare really free?

Part A (hospital insurance) is premium-free for most people who paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. Part B (medical insurance) has a standard monthly premium set by Medicare ($174.70 in 2024 for most beneficiaries, higher for high-income). Medicare Advantage plans often have $0 monthly premiums but you still pay your Part B premium. Medigap and Part D plans have additional monthly premiums that vary by carrier and coverage level.

Can I keep my doctor with Medicare Advantage?

It depends on whether your doctor is in the plan’s network. Medicare Advantage HMO plans require in-network providers (except emergencies). PPO plans let you see out-of-network providers at higher cost. Your licensed Medicare agent at Insurancy can check whether your current doctors and hospitals are in-network for any plan you are considering before you enroll.

Will Insurancy pressure me into a specific Medicare plan?

No. Insurancy works for you, not the carrier. Our licensed Medicare agents are independent, which means we are paid the same regardless of which plan you choose. Our job is to find the best fit for your doctors, prescriptions, budget, and health needs, then let you decide. No pressure, no quotas, no high-pressure callbacks.

How long does the Medicare comparison process take?

Most people complete an initial Medicare plan review with a licensed agent in 20 to 30 minutes by phone or video. You will see plan options side by side, including monthly premiums, drug coverage, doctor networks, and out-of-pocket maximums. Enrollment itself usually takes another 10 to 15 minutes once you have chosen a plan.

What information do I need to compare Medicare plans?

It helps to have your Medicare card, a list of your current prescriptions, the names of your preferred doctors and hospitals, and your ZIP code. Your licensed agent will use this to find plans that cover your medications, include your providers, and fit your budget. None of this information is required to start a quote.

Will I be sold to other companies or get marketing calls?

No. Insurancy does not sell, rent, or share your Medicare lead information with third-party marketing aggregators. The only people who will contact you are licensed Medicare agents from Insurancy, and only to help you understand your options. If you ever want us to stop, just say so.

Can I change Medicare plans after I enroll?

Yes. You can change Medicare Advantage and Part D plans during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7) and the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31). Medicare Supplement (Medigap) changes can typically be made anytime, but underwriting may apply outside of your initial guaranteed-issue window. Special Enrollment Periods are also available for qualifying life events.

Why use a Medicare broker instead of going directly to a carrier?

A carrier shows you only their own plans. An independent Medicare broker like Insurancy shows you side-by-side comparisons across most major carriers in your ZIP code. You see the real monthly premiums, the actual drug coverage for your medications, and the doctor networks all in one conversation. The price is the same either way, so you get more options at no extra cost.

What is the Medicare donut hole and does it still exist?

The coverage gap (often called the donut hole) is a stage in Medicare Part D where you pay a larger share of drug costs after your total drug spending crosses an annual threshold. Reforms under the Inflation Reduction Act have shrunk the gap, and starting in 2025 a $2,000 annual out-of-pocket cap on Part D prescription costs eliminates the deepest part of the donut hole for most beneficiaries.
